About the OP, only a bit with some friends. I remember asking LesuhAn why was she slaughtering me since she's a vegetarian. Discussing lines with MSC and SocialPanda maybe. I also enjoyed Areez's banter.

I would have imagined, as a chess server brings people from various nations, various cultures and various backgrounds together, that a common topic of conversations during games would involve talking about the unshared experiences the two players may have.

In a casual game, probably philosophy or human nature.  In a club game, usually my abrasive opponent is trying to tell me how he thinks he will crush me with some unsound gambit ;)...

One time I had a nice conversation about different types of yummy coffee's. I did not expect such an enlighted conversation from this particular person. It just goes to show that ya never can tell about some people 

Whenever I want an enlightened conversation I talk to myself.

Maybe a better topic would be about surprising or unexpected conversations?

Yes, this is one of the best reasons I like chess.com;  I like this interaction with people from around the world.
