I'm pretty sure it was how they plan all military operations, as D-1 would be one day before D+1 one day after etc, and the same with H for hours. Not just used in 1940s but until recently (and I assume still carried on today).

D-Day means the instant the operations staart, plenty of D days exist, 23 JUNE 2016 is the D-Day of UK new deal

each country has his D-Day.
For UK it is 23 JUNE , for Scotland it is too.
For Normandy it is 06 06 1944.
For France it is 14 07 1789.
