What makes a sport a sport?

Hi after mass amounts of "noise" I decided that those that are actually interested in discussing the semantics of what makes sport sport.  And what in this definition makes certain activities that don't fit all this criteria sports and activities that fit all the criteria not sports.

I think sports need to:

Have an official ruling body
Be organised
Competitive
Be based around skill/physical ability
Have luck as a small to non existant factor
Be well established (this goes into official ruling body)
(this ones from my flatmate) Winning or losing is clear based on performance - not the decision of a judge.  (this makes ballroom dancing, gymnastics, figure skating, etc - arts not sport)

None of this is concrete in my mind.  But if something satisifies all of those elements I find it hard not to consider it a sport.

I personally have a hard time calling chess a sport... but as I have said in a previous thread I think there should be a word for activities like chess that seperates them from the "lesser games" that it would otherwise get lumped in with.

A guy called Tim Schroll on a site called helium.com answers your question in length.

Whether his readers agree with what he says, is a different matter.
