I’d go either really hard into the psych horror field, or eerie with lots of suspense and a couple of well placed jumpscares

Interesting... But besides that, how do I visually make it scary but not too scary that it'll be too disturbing for the audience, hm?

You either make it visually scary AND disturbing for audience, or neither, there’s not really a way you can bridge between them
