Back in 2004 in sunny California, USA I was living with my then-fiancee, (Let's call her "Mary" to protect the innocent). I was preparing for a chess tournament when Mary came down with a very bad cold. I had done very poorly in the last tournament I was in and took a hiatus from the game to get my life straightened out. This was going to be my big comeback. Minutes before I left for the tournament she started an argument about how I am neglecting her for "a stupid game". Later at the tournament, I was unable to concentrate and blundered a knight. I played on but the situation quickly became hopeless and I resigned.
I returned home with my tail between my legs, and Mary immediately started arguing with me and told me that chess is a waste of time and I'm no good anyway. I didn't sleep very well on our uncomfortable couch. The next morning, Mary calmly told me that I would have to choose between a relationship with her, and chess. I explained how chess was very important to me, and that she would feel guilty if she made me give it up. I told her I loved her but I had to leave because I was running late for the game.
I was paired with a gentleman 200 rating points above me. I had the white pieces and played a pretty conservative game, and was holding my own. Unfortunately I ran into time trouble and started making minor mistakes which he turned into a winning end game. He was a very nice guy and gave me some pointers during the post-mortem. I was feeling pretty optimistic about things on the way home.
I opened the door and was greeted by Mary who was holding my framed Fide National Master certificate. She smashed the frame on a wooden chair repeatedly and pulled out the certificate, cutting her hand in the process. This didn't slow her down, she picked it up tore it to shreds while bleeding all over the certificate and the floor. Concerned, I wrapped her hand in a dish towel and drove her to the emergency room. She seemed pretty calm.
While the nurse was examining her hand, Mary told her that I had attacked her with a steak knife. I was stunned. The nurse left to call the police, I fled the hospital. I drove back home and quickly loaded up my car with whatever I could fit and drove to my friend's house. I dropped out of the tournament.
Eventually I got my own place, and had to work 60 hours a week to support myself. I had no time to play chess and I was totally exhausted when I came home every day. Things were ok for a while but I started getting very stressed out. I started drinking heavily and eventually I had to get drunk just to get through the day. I got a DUI while driving to work. I lost my license and my job. I had to move back in with my parents. Shortly after that my dad walked in while I was holding a gun to my head, trying working up the courage to pull the trigger.
So what's the most you've ever lost in a chess game?
