I grew up in Sydney and can confidently say that about 75% is just boring & ugly. If you are one of the lucky few you might live in one of those rare leafy or water-side properties that would require at least $800K but that would only get you a place in need of renovation!

I've only lived in Adelaide [very pretty & affordable but water is terrible], Brisbane [terrible chlorinated water & great if you love heat & humidity], Launceston [beautiful if you have views of the Tamar River! otherwise picturesque] & Hobart has a similar feel to Sydney except that it's affordable and lacks the stark, ugly side]. I'm now in Melbourne and live near the beautiful Blue Dandenong Ranges National Park which is about an hour east of the city...but who needs to live near the city these days. Clean air, beautiful surroundings but becoming almost as expensive as Sydney [should catch up in about 10 years] Hope that helps.

Its a matter of personal preference, not "which is better".

People will always argue that one is better than the other; which is pointless 'cause its something that can't be measured.

Melbourne is much better, in terms of sport (its the sporting capital of Australia) culture (concerts, art, theatre, comedy festivals) and traffic (the ringroads speed everything up). Sydney, in comparison, is a rat race. Traffic is horrendous, toll roads are slow and expensive, drivers are rude and impolite. Obviously, if you live in Sydney's eastern coastal suburbs around the north shore, Coogee or Maroubra, Sydney is a nice city to live in, and probably better than anything Melbourne has to offer.

In addition to the above, Melbourne's population is tracking to overtake Sydney in the next few years, which means the argument is settled. Melbourne is the winner.
