Ostriches and Emus don't have to fly. Along with the Cassowary, they can kill you with a blow from a swift roundhouse to the stomach. There's a story of a Cassowary coming out of nowhere, kicking this guy in the stomach and disappearing before his companions even knew what happened. He didn't last long. They have a spike claw they can arm the end of their foot with, or something like that.

That is mean looking. I used that story while writing about our ancestors coming on to The Australian mainland 60 to 70,000 years ago. They may have gotten there earlier. Many things are being pushed back in time with all of the incredible archeology and genetics that are been done. The atlatl may have come about 100 to a 120,000 years ago, and the invention of the bow has been pushed back to around 75,000 years ago.
