Why are chickens considered dumb?

Chickens are way too smart to be understood by us mortals. They do lots of things better than humans but they are most accomplished in acting stupid around people. I genuinely believe mine think I'm trying to do the same thing around them because they tend to really over exaggerate. So much distrust among us, can't take it anymore.

I've seen the light - I guess at least some chickens are smart...

As someone who had chickens, I would say they're dumber than a sack of potatoes, but I don't want to insult the sack of potatoes.
