Why do people fear death?

i like Neil Gaiman's , Sandman graphic novels , in it there is a character called death , she is depicted as a teenage , early adult goth girl , her fave phrase being peachy keen ,

when my mum passed away , it reduced me to a flood of tears as she was laid into the ground
death hurts the living , but its a part of life , some cultures they dont fear death they accept it ,
now when i think of my mum , i dont feel pain , even when i recall all the good hidings she so rightly gave me , i feel happy , and i smile
