Why do we speak
Some people just have a broad interpretation of ‘useful’ tho
Maybe we speak because silence feels heavier than words. Communication isn’t just about transferring information, but how we explore ourselves through others. Mistakes and apologies afterwards show that we're finding meaning in how not only relate to others, but ourselves.
Let’s start of with a little story. Someone I know got a girlfriend, and because they’re older than me (obviously, I have like 2 friends my age) they’re friends had slightly more mature reactions. Anyway, I’m sure you’ve all regretted saying stuff, and unsurprisingly, that is exactly what I saw happening. As soon as I saw the first actions, I knew what would happen.
So, one of the friends walks up, and in that half confident way that happens when you’re about to do something stupid, he starts questioning why they didn’t search for better. Now I didn’t care. I don’t really care what happens in my life, and to be honest, I was more interested in where the conversation would go than someone finding someone they could love. Anyway, surprise surprise, I knew right at the start there would be an apology. And guess what? I was right, of course. I’ve questioned the actions and feelings I’ve done and felt so many times, I have a basic understanding of mine and human nature. Anyway, got to the end, the separated, I followed, yes that’s weird, and I heard the apology. But, it made me think. Why do we speak? Is it merely to communicate. Or is it to question, understand. Why do we choose to not focus on those words, when we focus on so many others. I’ve seen people apologise, correct actions, but I also know that I’ve stopped myself before. So why, why do we speak?
