why does the app say i lost

I was up by 10 points at the end of a 1 min game and it said the opponent won by time out... i am very confused

You ran out of time. If you run out of time and your opponent has sufficient material where they could potentially mate, then they win.

If you run out of time, you can't win. That's is one of the reasons for a clock. Had you used less time you might not have been up as much material. There is a trade off.
