They were the first banks for a pharaohs wealth the golden top was were the wealth was stored as a visible symbol, but also , because of its height, weight, and visibility made stealing the gold impossible and easy to guard, not only that , but building the temple was a economy, thus creating both parts of a economy. This is in my opinion why they were created, so in short I believe they invented economy, and made gold valuable as a representative of wealth, after all gold isn't actually all that rare in a world sense, its just highly controlled, there are many other metals, or resources that are far away more rare and at the time gold wasn't used as it is today in computers, electronics, and technology, one could argue copper being more usable at that time, I also wonder 3,000 years ago which is more valuable a loaf of bread or a shiny rock??
