Actually burning to death in battle is not a problem that can happen in today’s world as the Geneva convention prevents the use of fire as a weapon, so unless you caught your self on fire you don’t have to worry about the enemy using flames
Also Thanos had decent morals as he wanted to prevent people from experiencing the pain of seeing the world they knew die in front of their eyes
The tactics he wanted to use were questionable but the end result has the same idea as peace, to prevent as much death as possible

There were even worse ways to die as chlorine gas makes you cough up blood and pieces of your lungs so… fire is your least worry
