I've foundaway to resize youtubeclips so that they don'tbreak page format. OK.
You Are a 50s Kid if ...
Thanks for the post Linuxblue1.
If your bike had only one speed ( 3 speeds were for rich kids ),
Your Family had 78 rpm records as well as the little 45s ( & a couple of the big 33s ),
Your House had a big Console Hi-Fi Stereo in the Living room,
Speaking of records ( & players ):
If you can remember the birth of Rock & Roll; Little Richard, Elvis, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bill Hailey etc etc ( and yes I do have a thread on the go Classic Rock ).
Best Toy from the 50s might be those magical Lego blocks, they were good for all sorts of building projects.
There are threads on the go here for 80s kids and 90s kids but all is very quiet here. One thought that I had is perhaps some of us kids from the 50's can't remember much from our childhood days ( scary that ).
Yes indeed that thread about the 80s kids is moving right along however some items mentioned over there could fit in here. Mirrored sunglasses for example, I had a pair of those in the mid-60s ( hey I was a cool & happening dude
). Also having to change TV Channels using a dial, boy that goes way back.
Thanks for the posts Conejiux. Yes I guess that Karpov is in that age bracket now too, time keeps moving right along.
Just checked out the 90s thread, not bad but a couple of things are a bit off. They mention the Tom & Jerry cartoons but that duo goes back 50 years or so. Also someone mentioned the game of hide and seek, well that one goes way back. Music cassettes are also listed but there we had two types, the standard ones and the 8-track tapes. Some people still preferred the reel-to-reel tape recorders tho.
If you remember when the VW Beetles first started selling like hot-cakes. I'm not talking about the copy-cat Beetles of today but rather about the rear engined & air cooled little wonders of many years ago ( quite the funny little machines ).
I remember when nobody had a TV. Radio days...we'd sit in the kitchen and listen to The Lone Ranger, The Shadow, My Friend Irma, etc.
Then around 1950, a great aunt and uncle got a Dumont. We would watch a lot of westerns...galloping on horses back and forth and shooting from the saddles. I think it was '52, or maybe '53 when we first got our own TV.
I liked those Beatle bugs, but I couldn't afford a new car. Besides, I am quite tall and there was no leg room for me. My first car was a 1955 Pontiac Star Chief, which I bought used in 1961 for $500.
I think it had well over 100k miles, it sure had the wear/tear and rust and that the odometer was turned back. But, it was my first "wheels" and that was a good thing.

When I arrived in Canada over 50 years ago as a young lad we lived out in the country. My step-father did not own a car at the time as that was a luxury item for the average farmer in those days. We made do with a 1947 Fargo truck ( a Canadian Dodge ) and yet riding around in that old pickup we felt like millionaires !
I am finding the challenge because I never lived in the 1950's..I am not THAT old :)
some moves in the Sicllian defence are called "1950's moves" because they were popular then. I can't recall which ones though!!
Further to my earlier video of Elizabeth Taylor, the sort of pencilish skirt that she wore with a belt in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" was a very "1950's ish" clothing style for women.
Wasn't she gorgeous in that? I am jealous. A 1950's kid grew up with Liz.
What did I get as a 1980's kid? Samantha Fox? Belinda Carlisle? Ouch. Why did I miss out on any divas with presence?

Yes there was only one Elizabeth Taylor. Another lady of those days was Grace Kelly who was to leave the movies and then became Princess Grace.
I remember watching the Apollo moon missions on TV.
... of course, I'm so senile by now that the moon missions are just about ALL that I remember...
Thanks for the posts.
I must say that the lack of repsonse to the above test is very interesting ( are people getting lost between the 1st and 4th questions lol ).
The test could prove to be a challenge for some. But the reality, I suspect, is apathy.
BTW, in regard to your opening post, when I was really young...no one had a TV. It was "radio days". And, I am very glad that I lived then.
We also had ice boxes (no refrigerators yet) and the ice man actually delivered a big block of ice on his shoulder (leather shoulder pad to insulate from the cold and huge ice hook) and placed it in the ice box.
But, no one cares about such things. They are busy playng chess (or arguing about something or the other).

Chess_gg: true a lot of people here have tunnel vision in regards to Chess and yet some interesting stuff does show up in this " Off Topic " forum from time to time.

There is a trend going on here with this type of thread, so:
If you can remember going to visit at several houses in your area and about 50% of them had NO TV sets,
You can remember a neighbour who brought home a brand- new Packard ( or Nash, or Hudson, or Desoto, or Borgward, or Simca etc ),
Sock Hops were held at Schools,
