I just tried your sequence above in IE. When I used the back button to go back from the De Francisco game it took me back to Game Explorer but to the starting position. However, I guess the way I would get around this would be that if I wanted to look at the De Francisco game I would righ-click and open in new window. Then when I am finished I can close it down and my window with Game Explorer would still be there. Perhaps not a perfect solution but a work-around. You could do the same thing by opening as new tab I guess.

I've noticed many times that when I'm in Game Explorer and, instead of clicking on a next move, if I click on the number of games for a particular next move (either accidently or intentionally), or click on an individual game that GE shows, I cannot thereafter just back-arrow back to the game I'm exploring. Well, actually I can go back to it, but it's dead. If I try to make a next move then, I get the Endless Waterwheel "game loading." I have to leave Game Explorer, come back in, and start all over from move 1.
A specific instance: In GE, I entered 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.a3 Bxc3 5.bxc3 b6 6.Bg5. Then I clicked on the De Francisco game. Didn't even do anything with it, just immediately returned to the GE game I was exploring by using my browser back arrow. (I'm running Safari.) It took me right back to the game I was exploring, but when I tried to make a next move--say 6...d6--I got the dreaded Endless Waterwheel. Happens consistently. Once I'm exploring a game, I dare not stop and look at any of the games GE produces along the way, or I'll have to go back and start over with my game in GE.
