I am a class player that has been teaching chess for 10 years as my daughters have progressed from elementary to HS level. I have been de facto coach and have had many failures and a few successes...
What do fellow coaches feel are the most instructive games for early players?
For beginners, I have used the Opera House game and Ed. Lasker-Thomas 1912. These are more fun than instructive, are short, and get the kids used to following notation.
For advanced beginners, I have used Alekhine-Yates 1922, Chekhover-Rudakovsky 1945, and Marshall-Capablanca 1918 (from "Most Instructive Games" by Chernev. These games truly do seem like good teaching games.
Two other favorites are Aronian-Anand 2013 and Barnes-Morphy 1858 (one of the few games actually showing a pseudo-bishop mate). These are probably less instructive but fun.
What games do others find most useful when teaching?
For other lay teachers like me, if you haven't used the classic games above, check them out as possible additions.
