There should be a coach. Whether it be the OP or someone else. Considering the OP is only 1100 they might need to find someone a bit higher rated for the job.

Coming together to play is ok, but if it's at a school, there should be teaching involved.

Have you ever had difficulty writing written assignments? I was fortunate that in my state there were two oranizations for scholastic chess both ran state championships. One organization you had to play in their regional tounaments in the state and finish first or second to play in their state championship. The other organization ran tournament most weekends all year long. You only had to play in two of their tournaments to play in their state championship. High schools in my city have a league. Many areas of the state run high school leagues. There is a high school state championship. Any highschool can play in the state championship. There are divisions just as in football etc. I coached the high school team. I went to the athletic director and told him I would buy the sets and boards if the school furnished the clocks told him my goal was to win a state championship. I told him if I was going to commit my time everyone on the team would get a varsity letter. He agreed. My first year I had 16 students on the team . I should mention here I also coached my son's middle school team and three of the kids including my son played on the same team in middle school, it was a Catholic high school out of the public system so I had a great start to the team. I created team shirts and sweat shirts 3 color graffics. League play one day a week and the team met in the library sessions lasted as long as there were players. I made the team wear their team shirts on league days. Advertised on the school pa system the time buses left for league play decorated the halls and cafeteria for the state team championships. By my last year as coach I had 70 kids in chess club on Fridays in the library. Had a very large number of girls which helped I am sure. There were 35 members of the varsity chess team seven teams of five. There state chess rating dictated which team they played on top team competed for the varsity state championship next team competed for the jv state title and the other five teams played in the open section for that state title. Boy I had a ball took two school buses to get the team to league and the state championships. In the last two years the boosters adopted us payed for our travel and hotel food and team shirts and sweat shirts. We had to pay our own way in the beginning. We won the 4a state championship twice a 5 a state title and overall state championship as a 4 a school beating a 6a school. Banner in the gym along with the football, basketball etc. My son just graduated from dental school doctor Petersen my job is done
