šŸŽÆ Argument: The Cheating Problem on Chess.com – Is It Out of Control?

Hey everyone,

I wanted to open up a discussion about something that’s been bothering me—and from what I’ve seen in comments and chats, I’m not the only one. Let’s talk about cheating on Chess.com.

🚨 The Problem
It’s no secret that Chess.com bans hundreds of thousands of accounts every year for cheating. The numbers are staggering: over 300,000 accounts closed in 2025 alone, including titled players and GMs. That shows the system is working, but it also proves how widespread the issue is.

And yet, in low to mid-ELO games (500–1200), the cheating feels relentless and under-policed. We’ve all been there—playing against someone with perfect move accuracy, no blunders, and zero hesitation... in a rapid 10|0 game at 800 rating. It’s discouraging, especially for new players trying to improve.

🧠 But the Detection System Is Strong—Right?
Yes, to be fair: Chess.com has a powerful fair play system. It uses engine comparisons, behavioral patterns, and human review (especially for high-level accounts). Most bans are legitimate, and they even restore rating points to players who were affected.

Plus, public accusations are prohibited, which protects innocent users from harassment. I totally support that. But it also creates a sense of secrecy. People report suspicious games and never hear back. Was the person banned? Was I wrong? That silence leads to doubt.

😐 The Experience Feels Worse Than the Stats Show
Even if the system is catching cheaters, the player experience still suffers. Many honest players are quitting or losing interest because it feels like “everyone cheats and no one gets caught.” Whether or not that’s statistically true, it’s a perception problem Chess.com needs to take seriously.

āœ… Suggestions Moving Forward
Faster follow-up or at least confirmation when a report results in a ban
An anonymous “cheater wall” where players can see that action is being taken
More educational content explaining what’s allowed (many players cheat unintentionally!)
Optional “Fair Play Verified” games with basic screening (like ID-verified accounts or longer time controls)

šŸ’¬ What Do You Think?
Have you noticed more cheating lately?
Do you think Chess.com is doing enough?
Any ideas for improving the system without ruining the fun?
Let’s keep it civil—this isn’t about naming names or starting witch hunts. I just want to see the community thrive and keep chess fun for everyone who plays fair. ā™Ÿļø
