Most chess variants suffer from lack of critical mass, a problem in many competitive online games. That is, people may want to play them, but not necessarily want to wait 10 minutes to get a match. This is exceptionally true if you want to play most variants outside of blitz.
Most of the time this is alleviated with bot matchups: If you don't get a match within X time, you just get a bot at around your rating.
