Bug in Chess.com Courses – Unable to Move King in Endgame Quiz

While beta testing Chess.com Courses, I encountered a frustrating issue in a lesson from Silman’s Complete Endgame Course (Sample).

  • In an opposition exercise, I am unable to move my king, even though the move is correct.
  • When the timer runs out, the course displays the correct move, but it still does not allow me to play it.
  • I have checked other quizzes, and they do not have this issue—if a move is legal, I can play it, or the computer recognizes the position as playable.

Draw Pop-Up Problem in Course Analysis

I also tested how the engine handles drawn or impossible positions and noticed something:

  • I noticed that after clicking "Play with Computer" or "Analysis" in such positions (e.g., drawn positions or theoretically impossible ones like multiple kings per side), the result is immediately declared a draw. In this specific position, this behavior is expected. However, I haven’t tested it in truly impossible scenarios, as I understand the engine would recognize them as invalid.
  • However, when trying to explore concepts like distant/diagonal opposition, the draw pop-up keeps appearing after every move, making analysis extremely frustrating in the courses feature.
  • This behavior is not an issue in normal analysis or other quizzes, where legal moves can be played as expected.

Request for Fix

  • Please fix the king movement restriction in the Silman’s Complete Endgame Course (Sample).
  • Modify the draw pop-up behavior in the courses feature so it does not disrupt free analysis and learning.
  • Other quizzes do not have this issue, so adjusting the course mechanics accordingly would improve the experience.

This issue is making it difficult to study key endgame concepts, and a fix would be greatly appreciated!
