Cannot challenge streamers due to "You have been disconnected"

I follow Ben Finegold, and one of the reasons that I follow him is that he does subscriber games twice a week (usually). But I have been screwed on more than a dozen occasions because I will submit a challenge, patiently wait, and then receive a "You have been disconnected" message which voids my challenge. If I re-challenge, this puts me at the back of the line. And then when I re-challenge, I soon get disconnected again.

I know that this issue affects more than just me. Back when Live was still around, this was not an issue. In fact, when both were running concurrently, I relied on Live in order to let the challenge issue persist even though I broadly preferred the Play interface.

There should be settings or other accommodations that allow challenge issues to persist through the Play interface.
