Chess.com Bots

I am a huge fan of chess.com, and one of the coolest features on chess.com (in my opinion) is the bots. One bot that has always intrigued me, though, is the Paul Morphy bot. I think that it's great to be able to play against one of the great players of the past. This bot got me thinking about an old chess program that I used to have called Chessmaster. This program had different personalities that were based on famous players of the past like Bobby Fischer, Mikhail Botvinnik, and Alexander Alekhine. My point with all of my rambling is simply this: What if chess.com added another section to their bots called "Great Players of the Past" or something similar. It would be awesome to play against personalities like Mikhail Tal or Tigran Petrosian.

Now, for the record, I don't exactly know how difficult it would be to program these chess personalities. However, my hunch is that if chess.com did it with Paul Morphy, Vishy Anand, and Wesley So, then it shouldn't be much more difficult to do it with other players.

I'm pretty sure most of the bots are all based on the same engine and have tweaks to their opening books and specific settings to manage certain parameters of the engine. If I had to guess, the site has already thought along those lines.

Great idea!  Maybe "Historical Figures in Chess" - As long as their games are documented, those can be used to develop bots?

I think one hurdle is that the rating system was different at different times in the past.  From what I understand, there has been "rating" inflation over time.

True, there certainly has been a rating inflation over time. Not only that, but we didn't always have the ELO system for ratings. Before ELO was the CMR system, and even before that was the EDO system. However, with computer analysis we can correctly determine how accurately certain players played. This is what chess.com uses in order to analyze the accuracy of your own games. This can potentially be used to estimate what these players' ELO ratings would be today.

@Bernat2004 Good point, the CAPS system analysis could be a helpful aid.
