As for improvements for the visually impaired, let's include accessibility for screen readers, shall we? We chess players who are also blind have been pleading with chess.com for more than a decade to implement accessibility so that we can also play games here. And before someone tells me it's not possible, go visit Lichess.org. Not only can blind people actually play games there, with every move being spoken by the screen reader, but we can even watch live games being played by others. Even those moves are accessible to us. Chess.com knows that blind people play chess. They've been asked repeatedly by blind players to include screen reader accessibility so that we can enjoy games here. They simply don't want to put in the work, and they just refuse. And the USCF actually has online tournaments here, I believe. It's not fair that we can't play in those tournaments, simply due to a lack of accessibility. It's shameful, really. Lichess.org is totally free, yet they were able to go above and beyond in terms of accessibility. Chess.com charges for memberships, and despite this income, they do nothing. It's one thing if you don't know there's an issue. It's quite another if you just don't care enough to address it. As far as I'm concerned, their unwillingness to address this issue speaks volumes about their attitude toward those of us with disabilities.
Please forward this to whoever is in charge of your UI. These three requests are to improve usage for accessibility for people who are visually impaired, keyboard navigation while reviewing games, and the layout of your new "Game Review" feature.
1 - Accessibility for visually impaired
There are over twenty-five different options for themes, and none of them are made specifically for people with visual acuity issues. I've set the theme to best I can, but there are still little things that make the site difficult to use. For example in the screenshot above, the vertical ellipse is at the slider bar to navigate the game review section. It is black on a dark gray background?!?! Why?
Similarly, I love the ability to quickly view the board in an alternate line. But the current size makes it useless for me. Making that pop-out board just 25% larger would go a long way towards improving its usability. Perhaps it could be a setting to increase it's size 25 to 50%.
2 - Move the "Game Review" button up below the graph.
On my giant desktop monitor, there is plenty of screen real estate to see the game coach's assessment and start review button without having to scroll down. But on my laptop, it doesn't show up unless I scroll down. My laptop's display settings aren't even set out of the ordinary - 1920x1080 and 150% scale (MS Recommended). This has to be a pretty common configuration.
A very simple fix is to just move these options to the top, and replace the giant "GAME REVIEW" header that does nothing.
3 - Please Improve Keyboard Navigation
I typically navigate game review & analysis using the keyboard. But the functionality of keyboard navigation is pretty limited. First, while the forward key goes to the next move, it doesn't enable jumping into an alternative line if one is present. Adding a <Shift><Fwrd> key combination to jump into an alternate line if one is present instead of the next move would be very useful. Right now the only way to do so is by using the mouse to click on the alternate line. Second, using the Down and Up cursor keys to jump to the first and last move is very prone to error. Frequently I hit one of them when I want to hit the Back or Forward key and end up needing to re-navigate to where I was. Maybe a better option is to use <Shift><Up> and <Shift><Down> to go to the top or end of the game, and regular <Up> and <Down> navigate a whole turn instead.
4 - Minor but annoying.
and
The upselling is obnoxious. It's no better than putting a third-party ad in the same amount of screen real estate. It would be fine if it wasn't going to be put in my face on EVERY.SINGLE.MOVE in the game review.
Thank you in advance for considering these modifications.
