If I get a draw to a lower level player, I will usually lose elo. I do not think this is fair. It makes sense that a low-level player will gain elo from a draw, but why should I lose my hard-earned elo if I managed a stalemate against a 300?

Think about it this way. Let's say a 1000-rated player faces a 2000-rated player. The 2000 is expected to win. So if they were to draw a game:

  • The 1000 is probably better than 1000 (so their rating should increase)
  • The 2000 is probably worse than 2000 (so their rating should decrease)

Yeah, I guess I never thought about it like that. I was thinking that if a 2000 gets unlucky and get a draw against a 1000, they shouldn’t lose elo. But that makes more sense; they probably are worse if the 300 made a draw to a 1000, and vice versa for the 1000 to 2000

Makes sense though.
