Is Chess.com Matching Algorithm Biased Towards Premium Members? Here's My Experience

Hi everyone,

I'm sharing this to see if anyone else has noticed something similar. I recently went through my game history on Chess.com and noticed a pretty dramatic change in my win rate, opponent levels, and matchmaking speed — before vs. after my Premium membership expired.

📈 While I was Premium:
I was paired quickly.
My opponents were usually within ±50 Elo of my rating.
I had a strong win rate (see red box in the attached screenshot).
The matches felt fair and enjoyable.
📉 After my Premium expired:
Pairings take longer.
My opponents are often 100–150 Elo above me.
My win rate dropped significantly.
Games feel much harder and frustrating.
I've attached a screenshot (see image) of my game history. The lower section (inside the red box) shows my games while Premium — mostly wins and balanced matchups. The upper section is after Premium expired — nearly all losses, and stronger opponents.

I’m not here to throw accusations, but I can’t help but wonder if there's an invisible hand pushing Premium users into more “rewarding” matchups — and doing the opposite once you cancel.

🤔 Has anyone else experienced this?
Do you feel like you're playing against much stronger players after canceling Premium?
Has your win rate or pairing speed changed significantly?
I'm super curious to hear your thoughts. Are we just imagining patterns that aren’t there — or is Chess.com subtly nudging us toward re-subscribing?

Thanks in advance!

You are comparing apples and oranges. Your premium period is mostly blitz games and includes 3 wins against 100 rated players.

The non-premium period is mostly rapid games against much higher rated players. It seems normal to expect more difficult games

I can show you same, with rapid games if you want that was the same thing. And what about elo diff?

I just dropped my membership and have definitely noticed a change in my opponents. Its getting very frustrating and has made me look to play elsewhere. I have been running into soo many blatant cheaters

If you go into all settings -> gameplay -> Challenges -> Open challenge rating

you can adjust the rating range of the opponents you'll be matched with.

I've got a free account and am pretty much always instantly matched for a game with it occasionally taking up to about 3 seconds max. I play 15 and 10 minute rated games.
