Does this new design also include Chess.com dropping its main page? If so it's a lousy decision as the main page added a lot to the appeal of the site. Chess.com, bring it back!

This main page has been moved to Chess Today. Click on Today in the navigation. We will soon be adding an option to make Chess Today your landing page if this is where you prefer to land when you visit Chess.com. This will also include and option to land directly on Live if you want to bypass both Home and Chess Today and get right to playing.

do you mess around with all this stuff to intentionally annoy your membership?

That is never the intent, @gambit-man. We hate moving things as much as you hate them being moved. This was a necessary change, unfortunately.

@denverhigh - would you like to have your Profile page as an option for your landing page?

RichColorado

 @ dallin

yes i would like landing on my profile . . .

why is it you don't have to use the new version? . . .

batgirl

I don't see the necessity in either in the change or the juvenile design.

i received this same lame response from jdcannon about the board being smaller in daily games. when pressed, he said it was due to "improvements", yet never described them.

for what it's worth, most of us do not care about achievements, flair, the changes to the homepage, and many other things deemed improvements.

what we DO care about is functionality, the board being larger than the dialog box, and automation that zaps our posts if, god forbid, someone writes the word bullsh!t.

just a few examples.

how about this-a year ago i asked why a tournament couldn't be set up where all friends are invited. a staff member wrote to me that he thought it was a great idea, and would get back to me. he did not. now, that would be an improvement. adults do not care so much about flair and virtual trophies as much as being able to communicate freely with our friends and most everything associated with, you know, actual chess games.

AlCzervik

you must be an adult.

outside of staff, i bet adults view my post as relatively accurate. the kiddos will think i'm a troublemaker and/or an old fogie that should learn to love things like flair and stop complaining.

52yrral

Al , now ya got me wondering how many *kiddos* would agree with your posts. I think there may be quite a few especially when it comes to communicating with friends!

sato_au

why can i not view the front page anymore? it just auto-forwards me to /home which is not interesting or informative. i want to see the front page!

why was it necessary to put 4 great big boxes on my home page?

Now that i've gotten rid of them (after seeking advice on how to) i'm left with the frame where they used to sit, taking ages to realise there's no need for it to be there, before disappearing and allowing the rest of the page to take up that space...

Gosh.  We are already on page 2 and have yet for one enthusiastic soul to proclaim, "I love the new look!"

some of the pages cause havoc on my eyes. how can one put in image as a background to their entire page? i can't seem to find out how to do it. it's my turn to hurt the eyes of others.

the ability to do so was removed in v3, IIRC. I can no longer use the pic i had in mine in v2...

Quit your complaining the developers need money for nothing

the world needs managers like you and other sensible persons. instead we have malfeasance everywhere.

I doubt there is any malfeasance.  I think the intentions are good.  However the explanation that the change is a necessity makes no sense to me. Originally, people were not given a choice and all home pages were pretty much the same. That seems to be as basic as it gets. So the change gives everyone an option to make some minor changes to a different looking (and unappealing) homepage. This is more complicated.  How can changing something from basic -where everything is the same-to complicated -where there are options- be a necessity? It doesn't make programming easier, the site faster or more streamlined.    The real issue to me is the childish design being forced on everyone, --not, in fact, out of any necessity, but out of lack of understanding of, or caring to understand,  the customer.

Lets look at this Logically what has the "New" design done that could not be done by the "side bar" nothing that makes chess better. But the developers get paid the web site hopes to make more money and you pay

If I actually could customize my Home page it might be workable. But every time I go to settings and try to remove things I don’t want it freezes and won’t make changes. When I refresh the screen it is back to what I don’t want. HELP!

It seems by implementing these new *improvements* ( ? ) they failed to follow one their own

Prime Directives - "Please be relevant and kind"!

The necessity here was in regard to the change from landing on the Index page, where all of our content lived, to no longer landing on the Index page. Our Index page has changed completely to be less focused on content and more focused on playing, so new visitors get a better idea of what they can do on Chess.com. If you view chess.com from an incognito window, you'll see that you would not want to land on that page every day.

We created the Chess Today page as the new home for fresh content, and you will soon be able to make that your default landing page if that is what you prefer.

As far as Home is concerned, it is true that some of the changes here were not necessary. We did need to update the code on the page, and took advantage of needing to recode the page to implement a feature that had been asked for thousands of times: customization. We had hoped that making Home customizable would be something everyone enjoyed, because if there is something you don't like, you can change it.

When you have millions of players logging in every day, it is hard to nail it for everyone. But we really care about how everyone feels about this. Especially you, @batgirl. You are awesome, and we are so happy you are a part of this community.

I know that style is a big deal for you. It is for us as well. We are constantly trying to find how we can balance making chess more fun and accessible for everyone but still treat chess with the serious respect it deserves. We do hope to avoid being juvenile in these efforts, regardless of how design trends lean more juvenile outside of Chess.com. We strive to learn as much as we can from Beta testing, but that does not always represent the full spectrum of views and tastes across the site.

Thank you everyone for sharing your thoughts and reactions here. We care. We're listening. We're adjusting.

'Today' is a very odd name.  I would have no idea whatsoever what to expect under that title on a chess website without clicking it.  There used to be a nice simple heading on the sidebar called 'Watch' that did what it said, as well as others similarly clear.
