It seems that chess.com more and more goes Microsoft-style: they ran out of useful features they can add to the site, so now they start to add useless features that they exoect users will consider 'improvements'. One such annoyances are the super-large overlayedboard coordinates. Another is theconstant changing of the menu on the left.
Is it better? No, It's just different. No one asked for these these, and they serve no other purpose than to say "Hey, look, we've changed something! (see how useful your yearly subscription is."
These days both for Microsoft Windows and Office and for Chess.com, I'd prefer to pay for them not to change the GUI. STOP CHANGING IT FOR THE SAKE OF CHANGING, please.
There is no way that I know to go around it: one can turn the coordinates off completely, but that's not the same as small non-intrusive row and column numbers - as they should be.

Hmm, I usually have them off.
I wouldn't particularly notice them.
Is it possibly you are overreacting?
