but because in pass and play mode the opponent's pieces are reversed. I don't understand, what's the point? Could you set up the pieces so that the opponent has them facing right? That would be nice and logical. Thank you

The default setting for Pass and Play is the pieces are oriented the same way. If the setting Board Rotates is off the the sides switch and is meant to be used when physically handing over the device.
If that setting is on, it is meant to have the device between you and your opponent, so the orientation of pieces is correct for the other side on the move.
At least, that's how Android currently works.
