I have reported numerous players for exactly what the OP has suggested. I have even discussed it with your Bot support. But nothing. Call someone a cheat and it's a capital offence (as by the first line of your reply 'Discussions about potential cheating is not allowed in the general forums.'). But sandbagging is cheating, call a roses by any name and it is still a rose.
It is a shame that chess.com doesn't care at our level, but there is no money down here, so why should it. In the meantime I will keep calling it out, reporting it, and telling people they are cheating...I bet I get banned before any sandbagger/cheater.
For some reason there are absolutely tons of sandbaggers in the range he mentioned. Either that or magically the 600-1000 range of players has just magically grown 10x stronger over like 2 years. Seriously, people talk about a 100-200 rating difference between Lichess and Chess com, my rating difference is more like a 700 rating difference. There’s no explanation for that other than sandbagging occurring here in vast quantities at that range.
In terms of how to go about fixing such issues, they should start by hiring way more staff, as they are absurdly understaffed for a 100 million user company. Then they should design the system so that any account that has a difference between their highest rating and current rating that is 300 or greater is automatically reported so they can take a closer look and determine whether or not it is sandbagging. It wouldn’t fix everything but it would certainly make things much better.
I'm sick of this and playing people who are obviously using an engine in the background. They're playing at less than 60-70% accuracy and then suddenly they're Magnus! Obviously you can't prove it but it's really making me want to leave the site and the admin are doing nothing at all about any of the issues. Makes you sick when you're paying over £100 a year and don't know if you're ever getting a fair game ![]()
