Happens to me too. I have to change the board in order to play. 
Squares are gone in Safari/Big Sur 11.1

Close all tabs/windows to the site and clear you browser cache. Then try again. If that doesn't work, change your board. If that works, try changing back to the original board and see if it works.
For me this is now fixed. I changed the board to something else, Walnut then I logged out, clear the cache, log in and I could select the green board and it worked.
