I'm wondering how little thought went into this. The board is massively enlarged for no apparent reason, but the name and rating of your opponent is very hard to read against the black background of the board's border. Similarly, black captured material is almost invisible.
While I haven't come up against someone with a bad connection yet, I suspect that because of the small chat box it won't be obvious that the disconnections are occurring.
My 2c worth says that Chess.com should talk to someone with expertise in designing easy to read graphics and redraft the screen layout.
