Change in news functionality

For me, the simplest way to fix the news and make them effective again is to roll back and allow them to be send as PM again. If that is not an option, maybe something like below:

NOTE:

- Separate alerts for group news (so they do not disappear when you click “ignore all” to get rid of your group notes alerts. Group notes will always give more alerts than news and is out of control of the admins. Admins use news for really important and much less frequent communications).
- No “ignore all” for news (you can manage your group settings if you wish)

- Display title of news only. Do not link to a screen which displays first paragraph of news that may actually discourage folks from reading or skimming actual new.
- One click in to get to actually news (news typically have hyperlinks to a game or forum so that is already a two click solution. Drop-off  per click in 80+%, 3-4 click solutions, like now means that only 0.4% of members click all the way in)

I agree with all your suggestions Joakim! Sorry, I am not as computer savy as you.  The problem is will chess.com make these changes soon if they agree with them at all?

Truly, the old version was working fine! "Why rock the boat?"

Well everybody I completely understand the issues involved with the difference in the way the Newscasts are now delivered. I will send in a ticket as well but there is much more involved with V3 handling now of the Newcast. Completely different platform so old coding would be of no help. I'm not saying it couldn't be done as I'm sure it could. At this point to reverse back to the old way of handling Newscast would be a huge change for the developers.

I will see how far they can go in changes to the current system. Personally I think if the Newscasts were exempt from the Ignore All would force members to at least open the alert. I'm thinking we may have to be a bit more creative to get their attention keeping them from dumping before at least reading the Newscast. This I think would be realitive easy to do compared to changing to PMs.

We have lots of opinions here and will see if can get to the developers to decide how we can improve this in this late stage of V3 development.

Cheers everybody and Thanks for all the great opinions :)

I will update here what I can find out. This may take a while to get a answer as they will have to review all options involed and amount of time that can be put into the changes.

Commander_Riker

LOL Well I do not know anything Official yet but I will update all as soon as I have a definite answer :) Thanks All

Noooope, you can't weasel away that easily, Jeff.  Your stamp makes it official.  You promised us all 5 year subscription extentions for $.05.  We all heard it. Tongue Out

Commander_Riker

LOL Good try Mug :)

...it was worth a shot.  You still have to be nice to me, though.  I'm a customer now.  Laughing

Thanks for posting here Commander!

Yes, combination of:
1) No "ignore all" for news
2) One click into actual news

May go along way... see also my screenshot idea in earlier post

VKJ I liked your screenshot idea. I a working on a similar thing for v3

Since the old system is not coming back I do like VKJ and give ideas on how we can imrpove the current news system. VKJ had some ideas for v2, it was a minor change, suggesting anything bigger would be a waste of time because they do not work on v2 anymore. That's why I give a suggestion on how news could work in v3. I have lots of ideas here, I would appreciate if someone helped me with more ideas or improved the things I have already suggested. It can be hard to give feedback on this if you are not used to v3, but I have been in v3 for 4 months. So this is how I want it.

Lots of ideas there, please let me know what you think. ( if the text is small try zooming on your browser, the picture is high quality, chess.com made it smaller)

And this is what it could look like as an alert.

Just a bigger "box" for news alerts, with some text about the news article. And when you click on the alert it would take you to the news post, not the list of news articles or the groups home page.

Your Idea which is a good one and has been suggested many times. Erik has posted he is looking into the ability to have the window boxes customizable as to content and size / location. We will have to wait for them to get the custom windows coded and working before we can really get into what the content can be IE; Alerts / News Panel / Messages, Online games, Stats. This may take a while as lots of re-coding just for the window changes. In the mean time maybe a good idea to start another forum to deal with idea just for the new window content chooses and how it can be laid out. These ideas are great and we will have to make it easy for the developers to understand and evaluate. The more  exact ideas the better. At this point I can not give any dates on what Erik has agreed to have changed lots of work I'm afraid. SO this could give us some time to get the bugs out of our ideas to give the developers the best shot at understanding and getting right the first time. Cheers everybody and Thanks for all the great ideas :))

Most users are still on V2, could news be fixed there first as fix there following something like my screenshot should be a smaller effort?

From what I have heard nothing is getting fixed per se except maybe the most major bugs. Pretty much all working on V3 trying to move forward to completion then V2 will be gone ??

VirtualKnightJoakim

But if switch to V3 is, say, 12 month away...a long time to be without an effective news feature?

Commander_Riker

I do not have any exact dates but I'm extremely sure it will not be that far off. My personal guess was by the end of this year just based on the amount of work in making all of these changes. THERE is no Official time for V2 to leave so my guess is just that just a guess ??

VirtualKnightJoakim

Still, if V3 is 6-12 month away, could we ask chess.com for an effort estimate of just exemting news from "ignore all" and making alert link directly into news item...with no UI change initially?

Groups will suffer if another 6+ month without news and open matches??

From my point of view, it is really bad that both V2 and V3 are out there at the same time. It is inefficient to devote resources on V2. The versions are not backwards compatible which you only find out when you try to access a link that was created in V3. If chess.com has decided that V3 it is, then V2 needs to go. As an admin, you have to stick to V2 as otherwise members that are on V2 will get nothing but 404 messages.

VirtualKnightJoakim

I agree that too concurrent versions are inefficient and chess.com should quickly get to one version... My question is: is it wise to leave the broken news functionality unfixed for so long? What if V2 will first be phased away in 6-12 month? That is a long time for groups to operate without effective news...and for some large groups, without open matches
