I used to use news for many purposes:

-  team match reminders

-  vote chess reminders

-  announcement of new forums

-  change to group policy

-  surveys and other fun group activities

-  etc

Now, it seems as no point as no one (0.4% to be precise) get to see the news

Exactly!

Firstly VKJ I do not know who you told out of the topic, thus, I believe everyone here wants to helps and fight back the news functionality but expressing in different ways only.

Lets not to mention there many good old functions are gone for real(sigh). What I want to say is we need to let them knows our situation in order urgently to fix the news, six months are way too long they need some pressure, they need to know a news forum link to personal messages are very important to us, like you and a female member in page1or2 mentioned we spend many hours to wrote a special news but end up no one reading, there no more members know the teams need you in match, there no one knows a vote chess is waiting, there no one knows who won the most matches in house, who was the one rewarding memberships etc...what an frustrating feeling once you done a titanic project for your group but there actually no one readingFoot in Mouth

So chess.com staffs, please fix it NOW not a minute to lose!!!

Into the weeds, I go..

Groups/Clubs are stagnating for many reasons.  One reason may be the lack of News outreach, though I have my doubts.  I think the biggest cuplrit, actually, has to be admin pilfering each other group's most active players to the point that said active players are burned out and no-longer active.

Some admin go around creating new groups willy-nilly then abandoning them after such time.  Zombie Admin, Zombie Groups, & Zombie players... I have a group of ~550 members with a match participation rate of about 8 players per match now.  Should I go through and weed out those non participants?

Placing a max number of Clubs/Groups a player can join is not the solution.  I would love, instead, an Admin tool that says if any given player has not joined in a Club/Group match in xx weeks/months/years, that said player is automatically booted from the group.  Ditto for zombie admin, but they are generally easier to fix than zombie players.

Fixing News broadcasts will only generate another 3-5 players / match for the group I mentioned above.  I'm not hinging my group/club participation rates on this fix we're waiting for.  I have many bigger issues to tackle for getting group/club participation rates up.  👍

Sounded like it was in the works to be fixed, from what was posted earlier.

Send Friend Request

Hi erik,

I am Radu, admin of Team Romania. Back in time, I've sent many suggestions for site improval. Now I'm using the new version, V3, and I have seen some of them have been implemented so I wanted to say thanks and to congratulate you on the good work!

But there is one feature that has been modified a few months ago on the v2 and in v3 is the same: the functionality of group news. Before the change the news was sent to members as personal messages. Now the news is just a simple alert. Because of this change many groups have already fallen asleep and it is difficult for admins to communicate with their team. There is a topic opened on this issue and many admins support the return to the old functionality: https://www.chess.com/forum/view/suggestions/change-in-news-functionality

Please take the decision to return to old functionality!
Thank you!

Thanks! We are working on this. I am not sure that we will return to messages, but we will make the alerts better.

Just posted this again, in case someone missed it.

This is Erik's response today about when the "news functionality" will be finalized.

  • This IS being worked on right now.

  • It's not so easy to do because of how it impacts v2. But it's almost done!

Very good news! Thanks VirtualKnightJoakim, Precious2c and most importantly Erik for being sensible on this! It seems to me this is a matter of days now.

Commander_Riker

Great I also didn't want to message him if others were already doing it. I knew all along the issues would be V2 & V3 operating at the same time. If V2 were removed already it would be much easier to make changes. Not sure how they will make the changes that work in both versions. At least we know they are working on it thats about all we can ask :) Thanks all

VirtualKnightJoakim

I am very encouraged that a fix to news "is almost done" and I really hope it will be deployed soon!

I think it may be wise with a small fix as soon as possible and then maybe we can wait for more comphrensive news fix?

I would suggest making news alert a deep link into news item. It just very confusing that it now goes to a list of news and is an extra click (in V2 two extra clicks as I always end up clicking on group name).

As I said, this change can be made consistently in both V2 and V3 and should be a small coding effort??

Long term in V3, I belive group news need their own section and not have ignore all (you do not have ignore all for everything, such as friends request, right?) or be deleted when you click ignore all for group note alerts...

In below V3 screen, I had a critical group news but it is down the list and drowned out by the many group note alerts. After checking a few of them, I usually click "Clear all"... ("Ignore all" in V2)

Try to glance at below... which comes after I scrolled through my vote chess and friends requests sections...

I learned the trick of not rejecting friend requests, just ignoring them, as members tend to get offended and PM you if you reject their requests... so I have a lot to scroll through before I get to the group sections... I think best if groups news were near the top...

News in V3 today:

After a lot of scrolling, I finally get to the group section. Now take a quick glance at below... it is immediatly clear that among the alerts for radnom group note chatter, there is a news alert in below? A critical news that an admin have spend a lot of time writing?

No, and it will be gone as soon as I click "clear all" (V2 "ignore all")...

I recall being banned from certain groups/clubs for going off topic.. Tongue Out

Commander_Riker

Well we are staying on topic if even a bit pushy ?? We are not in a good position to demand changes. Erik has been so cool about spending maybe close to millions to continue improve V3. He has made many user requested changes with lots of work for the programmers. They all understand the problem now. We need to step back now and let Erik and his programing staff to deal with the changes that can be done. After 16 pages the problem is completely known and just have to let them find what can be done to improve it. I have my faith in Erik as he has a great record of getting it done right :) IMO

unu

I agree.

Excellent, this post did its job, now time to wait and test the fix.

Precious2c

Hey guys and girls!!  This was the last two messages I received from Erik reference to this!!

The first message was him explaining that it was a difficult process due to v2.
