A pop up screen should appear telling both players that an opponent is in check. Otherwise he app is great and I would recommend to anyone.

Check isn't usually announced in tournament chess. It is considered almost an insult to your opponent to announce it.
It really isn't necessary here because if your opponent is in check, any move that doesn't get him out of check will be illegal and won't be allowed.
