Chess.com - Version 3

I also hate version 3 and would welcome the turn to version 2, with all it's flaws...

I'm not claiming V3 is perfect but on my small laptop, the format is quite acceptable & I've adapted to the new menu layouts & functionality. I think the alerts/notifications are an improvement on V2. My inbox is also a lot easier to manage now.

On the downside, I can't paste a list of teams (for example) & make them numbered or bulleted because it only works on the first item. Also, the automatic engine analysis in Game Editor is a nuisance.

So why do some people hate V3?

Much less user-friendy forums in my experience.

How so?

Yes! Way better

The comment window is so... I don't know, packed. Also colours, terrible, too light in my opinion. Chrome extension is great, but again, too hard to use. I also don't like the font... Not sure, just the whole thing isn't appealing to me.

On the other side, live chess is superb.

You can make the comment section larger, though it is a per post thing.

I meant especially the editor thing. Also, just took a look and found what is bothering me the most. Icons are not coloured and that's also why it seems so hard for me to enjoy it:

And comparison to v2 here:

No idea, just my opinion.

Not sure what looks more pleasant, the tree or the mountain.

You must have few alerts and few messages in your inbox. It's *really* annoying when you have a lot of them to have to keep scrolling and going back and scrolling again, and it's *mildly* annoying to have game notifications mixed in with forum post alerts without being differentiated from them, and I *hate* the "conversation" style of messages--I hated it when Yahoo adopted it, and I hate it here. And I *hate* having to delete messages one by one. I get a lot of notifications I don't care about, and sometimes I spend a little time away from chess.com, and I want to be able to delete many messages en masse, which I could do in v2. It all just adds up to having to take twice the time to do half as much. (Slight exaggeration--but slight.)

Of course, it would also help if screens didn't take so bloody long to load. And in Vote Chess, it would help if the analysis board showed up as a separate board. And it would help if screens didn't sometimes show up upper-part only, or middle-third only, so that I had to leave forum discussions without having finished and then hope I remembered later what thread it was. And on that point, the labeling of the threads and forums while you're working in them could be a lot better. And I can't understand how it's an improvement to force you to go to the list of forum topics in order to post a new topic instead of doing it from another discussion thread. I saw very few improvements (one of which is that posts don't seem to vanish into the ether if you hit the wrong key anymore, which is admittedly a big improvement).

It's true that I don't receive very many messages but I do have a lot of alerts & I agree about the problem of distinguishing my VC games from other alerts. That is a bit of a step backwards compared to V2 & they might be put in a different colour or box.

One thing I really don't like is the messaging facility on a member's profile page because it's little more than a note with no font, colour or ability to send diagrams or graphics. The normal messaging has all these so I think it's probably an oversight?

"Of course, it would also help if screens didn't take so bloody long to load" - that's a relief because I thought it was just my laptop. When you respond to an alert for a new note in one of your groups, have you noticed that it takes forever....?

If you click the envelope icon, from within the simple message box, it will take you to the full editor in messages. Not sure it was an oversight, just a design decision.

As to speeds, I've seen decent speed on most pages, though that isn't always the case. Not as fast as v2 is/was but getting better on most page loads for me.

Thanks, I hadn't realised that but I wonder why the standard message-editor, with all the functions, isn't used by default as it is in V2?

The app on Android is called v4. But part of the reason for v3 was the ease of updating code and other design elements. For all you know, the site may already be considered v4
