Clock which counts thinking time

I use on-line chess to play with a few friends. But we would like to play with clocks more like playing "over the board". That is, have the clock just count how long we are actually looking at the position on our own moves. Obviously it would have to be based on trust. Has anyone worked out a simple way to do this?

We have just started a game where we are timing ourselves for each move and posting the time, and total so far, as a chat message when we make a move. But it is a bit clumsy to say the least! Does anyone know a way to automatically time how long the game page is being displayed?

Are there others out there who would like to do the same? If so perhaps chess.com might implement this? It would seem to be a good hybrid between on-line and live chess. The idea is to get as close as possible to playing over the board but without both players having to be at the board at the same time.

Thanks in advance for your views and suggestions.

This is interesting.

It would be a really cool type of time control if it could be implemented.

However, the clock shoould start as soon as you open the game and only stop when you move, ( meaning it shouldn't stop when you close the page without moving)

Wonder if it could be done....

Any time system that allows the player to delay the move ad eternum will fail.

Your sugestion needs a little change: The player has a determined time to make his move (e.g. 5 days) regardless of the time he spends anylising the position. So, whatever finish first (the fixed time or the analyses time),  the game is over.

Thank you both for the comments. I agree, both of these suggestions are improvements.

I think it would be fairly easy to implement.
