Complaints?

Hi, I don't normally bother with stuff like this but I just played someone called who said an incredibly racist thing whilst I was playing a game with him. Something to the words of "Hitler should have finished what he started and kill all the Indians". I couldn't be bothered to correct the factual inaccuracies in the trash he said but nobody wants to listen to idiots like that. I'm sure chess.com acknowledes people's right to free speech but hate preaching is a different matter. I'm from England normally and the things he said could have got him arrested in my country.

So I was just looking through the options and wasn't sure where I send a complaint like that to and just wondered if anybody knew. Thank you in advance for any help in this matter.

Are you serious? You have to pay $9.00 to hear someone say that in a movie! Report him. That's the right thing to do. No. It's not. It makes no sense. If he would have been arrested for that in England, then England sucks.

Dont take it personally. If it was in a live game there is no proof of that beeing written. if it was Online chess then there will be written evidence of this and you should report it as artfizz has suggested.

This makes me question your country more than the one you accuse. You live in a country that locks people up for their speech ?!

If the protection of the First Amendment is to have any meaning at all, then it must protect speech that some will find offensive or disrespectful. Speech everybody agrees with doesn't need any protection.

Using cut and paste I can make anyone say anything.

I belive that chat in live chess is not stored on servers and is deleted as soon as game is finished. On the other hand things said in online chess games are stored on chess.com se4rvers "forever" and cant be manipulated without doing some "heavy hacking" and illegal activities ;)

The guy sounds like a piece of crap, but I'm forced to agree with Reb.

Sorry but you are all wrong (and I am apsolute sure in this-since I study it):

the right to freedom of speech is not absolute in any country and the right is commonly subject to limitations, such as on "hate speech", defamation, obscenity  etc..

In Croatia constitution(copy paste from our goverment web site ;): guarantees freedom of speech, but Croatian penal code prohibits and punishes "who based on racial, religious, language, political or any other belief, wealth, birth, education, social status or other properties, gender, skin color, nationality or ethnicity violates basic human rights and freedoms recognized from international community.

And I agree with this. Trust me even in USA there are limitations on freedom of speech (no matter how much you delude your self that there arent any)

Canada has a similar law, as do many other countries.

de jure, saying what that person said does not violate basic human rights.

Thanks for that. I thought that I am only one here who knows that ;)..but I think that we went out of the topic a little bit ;)

Freedom of speech, as implemented in the USA, doesn't exactly allow unfettered freedom to defame, slander, advocate the violent overthrow of the government nor does it allow hate speech or other misc. inflamatory stuff.

That doesn't stop child molesters from claiming freedom of speech when the publish explicit images of kids on the web.

And freedom of religion does not allow extremists to smoke marijuana or kill people because "their religion says so."

Freedom does have limits where the issue is protection of society.

Wow, if you smoke pot, you're an "extremist". Why don't you call them terrorists?

Whatever...

Then basically freedom of speech doesnt exist, nuff said.

Thats utter nonsense. Our country is too stupid to do anything against hate preachers. Case Study: Captain Hook.

Otherwise known as Abu Hamza:

Currently in Belmarsh Prison (UK), held on remand pending extradition to the U.S., to face terrorism charges related to his "hate speeches". So then, not much difference, whichever side of the pond you live.

Spoiler Alert: Capt. Hook gets eaten by the crocodile at the end of the tale.

Yelling "FIRE" in a crowded auditorium when there is no fire would not be protected free speech either. Especially when you are called to the carpet to explain the deaths of people trampled in the ensuing stampede for the exits.

Deliberately saying or doing something so that directly endangers the physical integrity of others? You should definitely be held accountable, no doubt.

Insulting someone? Please. "Stick and stones (and trampling feet) will break my bones (or possibly kill me), but words will never hurt me."

I'm willing to bet the only reason someone wants to file a complaint is because he pulled out the Hitler card. Personally, I'd just correct his statement, make fun of his utter lack of history knowledge, and be on my way.

People nowadays are so sensitive...

Reb, it appears you may be confusing some things here.

   A. the 'so-called'  First Amendment, refers to the first amendment to the US Constitution.  That would apply ONLY to Americans, and only when they are engaged in a dispute against their own government and its' restrictions on their free speech - and ONLY when in America where the US Constitution and its amendments may protect some forms of speech and an individual's right to exercise such.   see B below.

   B. the OP is from England - or at least registered as British when he signed into this site.  Whether he actually is or not, could be discussed/clarified, but it would appear he is not in the USA.  Regardless of where he physically is, this is an international community, and as such, is governed by the benevolence of Erik, the owner of this site.

   C.  The First Amendment to the US Constitution does not apply to even American Citizens when they are in a foreign country, or when they are in a civilian realm of discourse - such as claiming the first amendment protects their rights to advocate various things specifically forbidden in the 'terms of service' for this site.   (when in Rome, do as the Romans do - say as they say....)

   D. most countries in the world do not protect an individual's right to have freedom of speech at all, and in fact, many of them forbid a lot of speech that is allowed in the USA under the title of free speech.

regards,
