I hope you're not claiming this for live chess.

When you compare abort abuse and colour selection abuse, abort abuse is easily the lesser of two evil

My point too, but still I think that the abort option should be removed.

JazzTChess

Convenient for the person who aborts, but rude to his or her opponent.  It is good to learn about chess.com, but not at the expense of others.

Hi, I caught this debate late.  I agree with Jazz.  Unless prevented by some unavoidable reason, play the game to the end, struggle to make the best of the game even at a disadvantage.  That how I learn to be better in the next. Abortion leaves a sour taste, a less than fulfilling win and makes the winning points a ;little fakish.

I favor keeping it, I don't mind at all if a higher rated player doesn't want to play me. I use it when the game starts and white takes too long to make first move. It can get frustrating when you keep getting the same player aborting 2-3 games in a row  when there is a lack of opponents.

Your first two sentences favor keeping the rule, but your last sentence is an argument in favor of eliminating the rule.

danested

I am in favor of keeping abort. The player must have the option of choosing to abort.

I dont understand why you would want forcing someone to play to the end - a game that has barely started and in no way is anyone at an advantage.

Yes it is abused by people that want to start a particular color - but I wouldn't really wan't to play with such a poor sport anyway ;)

Cheeta2

@Danested

If you choose to play a game, just finish it. In a tournement you can't just abort, because you don't like the colour you have to play with, or worse, you don't like the face of your opponent.

So: away with abort and let's play!

TheGrobe

As has been pointed out repeatedly, there are many good reasons for the abort option.  Can it be improved?  Yes.  Should it be eliminated?  Absolutely not.

TheGrobe

I don't know why the abort option -- and subsequently, no rating change for terminating a game, are available for so many moves.

Once each player has made a move, both should be locked into the game.

Prior to that, the abort option plays a necessary role.

The idea is members don't play themselves with another account to inflate their rating. But that still happens, and some people exploit the abort until move 4 feature.

Ha ha! he even sends himself trophies:

No confusion.  Get rid of abort: if you accept a game and then decide not to play, you should resign.

Cheeta2

I fully agree with JazzTChess: no abort-button, but only resign..or... you play!

Cheeta2

El_Senior: you're a man to my heart! Let's get rid of the button ànd the crybabies and let chess.com be clear for honest players, who love the play and not only the (rating)points..

Cheeta2

@JazzTChess: you're not the only one, I hate the abort option as well, because I think, once you started a game, you must finish it.

Agree completely!

TheGrobe

After both sides have made a move -- the same criteria for the clocks starting.  I'd hate to lose rating points after making a move as white and having no response from my opponent, forcing me to abort.

Other than that, I completely agree.

If you moved and your opponent doesn't he or she should lose on time - there should be no need for you to wait indefinately and no need for you to abort.

I think this is the solution to all misery!

JazzTChess

Absolutely :-)
