Eliminate the Abort option

The abort option is there for good reasons. Is it abused? Yes! But it is not a good enough reason to eliminate it.

I agree this is mostly a correspondence website and since and is made for people with no to much time on there hands so when someone doesn't have time for a game and doesn't want to waste vacation time the abort option is perfect. Whoever created this post just has very little patience and should abandon this idea to any chess.com staff.

I like the Abort button, not been a member for too long now, but have to say I have used it quite a lot, not seen anyone use it in a match yet when getting beat etc, I only use it when I seek a game, opponent comes along, I make my first move and no reply from them within 10-20 secs I abort, I think thats fair, as the person is either too slow or has bad lag, dont want to play, similar if I seek and its them to go first, if nothing within 10-20 secs abort is ideal, can happily move on to a new seek.

To the dude above me, I think you have it mixed up with the resign button. You can only abort in the first four moves, which is far too soon for anyone to be winning. I think the abort button will always be there, but I think it should definitely only be available for the first move of each player. After you move once, you have committed to a match. Also, there should be a few seconds of delay, such as ten or so, before the abort button is available. This will at least lessen the amount of immediate game abortions.

TheOmnissiah

But, as an elaboration, I personally see no point to the abort button. The site allows you to set every parameter for open seek challenges, so if you don't want lower players taking you on, then set the minimum rating higher. And it works to same way for players above your level. Set the maximum lower. I just don't see the practical purpose of the button when all the other systems can be used in cinjunction to give you exactly what you want in a game. If you don't want to play chess, then don't put up an open seek. 'Nuff said.

You definitely need the abort button in a live game, since you often try to join a 30 minute game and end up in a bullet game.

This dude.

Cystem_Phailure

He's dead.

TheOmnissiah

He's also most certainly not a fat dude with spelling problems.

No, I suppose not-- most dead people are quite good at spelling.  He's also not a beagle with dyslexia, or a sundial with a chipmunk perched on it, or a DC-3 with a broken propeller, or . . .

TheOmnissiah

...or a guy with useless input on a serious forum topic. We done with this now? Can the adults go back to talking?

evan99m2

The abort is useful when you are not taking advantage of it!!!!

comunist

I set my seek parameters and still get people 500+ points above me in rating starting games with me. Yes, I nabort!

Why ask me?  I'm not the one telling other people what to do.  That's your schtick.

i think they need to make a certain rule where you can only abort a certain amount of times per amount of games like u can only abort 5 out of every 50 games or sumthin like that because your computer wont messup tht many times or if it does get a new computer otherwise its just the cowardly approach

ekorbdal

I prefer to play alternatively black then white so I HAVE TO ABORT on occasions before a move is made or (if my opponent starts as white) after one move. Pray tell what is wrong with that? Or - being new to chess.com - is there a way of stipulating your colour before entering into a game and I don't know about it? I would never abort under any other circumstances I assure you.

NimzoRoy

So in other words, players with a legitmate reason to abort aren't allowed to because some players abuse the privilege? Uh I don't think so...

They eliminated that ability to select color exactly because of people like you who won't play at all unless they get the color they want.

TheGrobe

Which exacerbated the abort problem by turning colour selection abusers into abort abusers....
