Fair Play Policy - Suggestion

Sort:

..... may have violated our Fair Play policy - it has been noted and they may have their account restricted.

I get this in at 10% of all blitz games when I am in a winning position.  So that is likely well over 100 games in the last year and I am not an overly active player.

I get this note exactly 0% of the time when I am losing.

Since I usually have 2 minutes in which to check my opponents account I have noticed that 99% are habitual disconnectors.

I suggest that whatever the restrictions are when one violates the fair play policy, I do not believe they are stringent enough.

I understand that some people have poor internet connections so for bullet and blitz I recommend the penalty be a series of restricted play beginning at 30 minutes after some set number of suspect violations.  This would give a player time to reset their routers or clean up their internet.  The next violation threshold could be 1 hour, then 1 day, 1 week, 1 month...

5 minutes between games is obviously too light.

I get the same message all the time when I'm beating someone in a 15/10 game.  That is a long wait.  Sometimes they don't even disconnect they just stay there and let their timer run out.  I suggest that we have a button on a person's profile that is the opposite of a "Friend" button and it allows you to make sure you never get paired up with that person again.  It could be "Poor Sport" button or something.  When a person has a certain number of "Poor Sports" on their profile then that number could show up with a warning next to their screen name and you could have to agree to a disclaimer before being paired up with them or you could just abort the game before you move when you see that you've been paired with a chronic "Poor Sport".  This way the chess community could police itself and eventually the "Poor Sports" might change their playing style when they realize how annoying they are and that no one wants to play with them.

I totally agree with your comments and suggestions, thanks to help out the community of chess. I hope somebody will understand and try to correct the situation...

You have the option to block anyone you wish.  Once blocked, you will not be paired with them in open challenges. They will not be able to send you messages, leave notes on your profile, or chat with you in Live Chess. You can do this directly from Live Chess by clicking on their username in the chat window or player's list.  A window will pop up and you can click on "Block Member".

You can also add them manually from your Privacy Page.

Supposedly people who disconnect a lot and violate fair play get paired more against each other (I assume players have some kind of fair play score that causes this).  How successful that is I don't know.  Personally I don't come across all that many disconnectors and since I rarely play longer than 10 minute games it doesn't bother me all that much since it is a guaranteed win.

As a system the one that is in place should be good though.  Maybe it just needs to be a little more aggressive in its application.

It's hard to imagine a perfect solution, because we don't want to overly penalize users who are having legitimate issues with their connection. At the same time, we also don't want users to intentionally make their opponents wait unnecessarily. We're always looking at our systems to see if there's room for improvement!

I find that is it handy to have a (nonchess) book by my computer then if i my the opponent disconnects i can pass the time by reading until either they return or the game is over.
