Greeter Games Volunteers

May I propose an improvement to Greeter Game Procedures that could possibly enhance their value to this already brilliant site ? One big problem I found during a stint as official greeter and  some subsequent unofficial greeting games was that my already lowly rating could quickly be eroded by new members who were often much more accomplished than myself and I had to discontinue greeting games in consequence.(Playing unrated games, although helpful in introductory issues, does not fulfill the objective of establishing a place on Chess.com rating ladder.)  So my proposal is that Official Greeters should be allotted a second New Greeter Account (NGA)  in which to conduct the greeting tasks. They could be given as  greeter a matching rating of say 1200 and if it was eroded too much they could simply be allotted another NGA account in which to continue the good work, their personal playing account thereby being completely uninvolved. However it would be possible for the site recognise  and further assist the valuable contribution of NGA members by awarding them ,say ,platimum status in their Greeter status only,  for the duration of their NGA accounts

Hi xqsme !as far as i recall those greeting games are unrated ,der s nothing to worry abt ur opponents playing capacity ,no matter wheather u win or lose ur rating will stick on with the same thing ! U may consider that match as an experience if u lose to de new comer ! So wats de point in creating in second account ? i still can't get u right !

I hasten to add that as Greeters they would also have new player names , possibly Greeter One  etc for example.

Well Yes kingrider , but I  am really considering a new type of greeter game to be established.Quite often I  would also offer a game to a new member as an unofficial greeter to help get them on to the ladder, this always involved risk to my rating .

surely your solution is to not offer a rated game, just tell them how to offer an open challenge?

Avatar of xqsme

That is one of the functions of greeter programmes of course .

Exactly, so theres no need to change anything

Sorry to admit my exposition was imprecise  friends Thomas and kingrider,if you care to revisit you will see my edited and amplified proposals and thanks for taking trouble to comment.

Greeter games have normally been a waste of time for me. No one hardly ever plays a game all the way through. I think players above say 1800+ shouldn't even bother to do them, because so few people even try to play the game out.

There could also be a further use of proposed NGA facility whereby official greeters could be used to establish tournaments for new members only. At present brand new members can not take part in site run tournaments, mainly I believe  because of unknown skill level and level of commitment to  continue site play.

I've had the same experience (except for the 1800 rating). So far, 7 greeter games and none have gone past 3 moves.  I'm new here myself, so I'd like to help.

Is this general?

Unfortunately it does seem to be the common experience, I would say.

Well, I presume everybody here had a greeter game when they joined.

I have a vague memory of mine, nothing more. I wonder how many members (those who stay) feel they got something of value in that game?

Avatar of ZBicyclist

No, I didn't have a greeter game. I thought this was something new that just started.

I don't know about you guys, but I just got through an entire greeter game (as greeter) no problem. I don't see any problems with the system. If the new member doesn't want to play, he doesn't have to

I didn't have one.  Well, I was assigned one, but the "greeter" assigned to me was someone who had last logged in several months earlier, so my game never had a move.  I thought I was doing something wrong and couldn't figure out how to get the board to refresh and update. Cool

I've been considering making myself available as a greeter.  I don't see any problem with unfinished games.  The primary purpose of the greeter game is an opportunity for the new person to see how things work.  If they catch on quickly, or don't care to use the greeter system as their method to learn the ropes, no problem-- the game doesn't need to finish.

Say, while I'm thinking of it, I saw a comment from Erik in another thread where he mentioned something about a maximum time per move to be accepted as a greeter.  Anyone know what the cut-off is?  Maybe I'm not even eligible.
