Hand and Brain for the rest of us

I loved Danny's "Hand and Brain" games with John Urschel, and my life goal is now to get to be directed in a game by Danny just like that. I know it can never happen, though, so I'd like to request the next best thing: a Hand and Brain mode for live chess on this site.

This would be a new kind of chess, like chess 960 or four player chess. In this variation, an engine would determine the best move for each player, but only tell that player the piece to move. (Perhaps the relevant pieces would be highlighted on the board, and no other pieces could even be moved.) The challenge of the game would be to see which player could better divine the truth of the engine.

Some details:

  • Time controls would work like in a normal game, except that a player's time wouldn't start ticking until he/she had been shown the possible pieces by the engine.
  • You should maximize the randomness of the engine's opening choices, so as to generate the greatest variety of game flavors.
  • I'm not sure whether you should show a player's possible choices to his/her opponent. On the one hand, it would be interesting to see, but on the other hand, it could make the game too visually distracting. The highlighting of your own pieces would be a nice cue that it's now your turn. (Since your opponent's move can no longer be that cue.)
  • It should be easy enough to set the engine to be way stronger than any likely player, and still take very little time to calculate its moves.
  • As a treat, maybe every once in a random while, the "engine" could be Danny himself! (At least for one of the players.) Then maybe I could fulfill my new life goal after all.

I think this would not only be tons of fun, but it could be a super powerful training tool. Please consider making it happen!

I really like this idea. I think it would be a great way to learn as well
