Good idea.
Hide the rating of opponents in Live Chess

To those people who care about what the rating of their opponent is, please put a filter on the rating range of people who you want to play. It won't matter who you play then, since it will be YOUR fault who you are playing.
Sounds like a good idea TBD.

lame idea. Just play the board not the player.
No Sir, in Chess people play people, not inanimate objects like boards.
I don't get what you mean with your comment, kco ... please clarify yourself.

kco means you should play the position exactly the same whether it be against a 1200 or a 2800, opposed to say playing for tricks against weak players or playing for a draw against higher rated.
If you play the board their rating should be irrelevent.

If it that's what he means, I totally agree with him! But how do you encourage this "rating blindness"? By hiding it!
Read the second paragraph in the OP, that's exactly what I was saying ...

Yeah, sure you could force it on yourself but it's not really necessary.
Just get over it, at our level an extra hours sleep can mean a playing difference of a few hundred points. I know on some days I play like a 2100 while on others i play like a 1100, a persons rating shouldnt scare you unless its above 2867.

To be fair I don't even look at the rating usually until a few moves in. It's pretty easy to only look at the board.

I'm just proposing this as a selectable option in the Live Chess interface, not something which should be forced on people.
So far the majority of people answering ITT were positive about the idea, so why not give it a chance?

The reason for that is that oftentimes I get anxious or overly-confident in view of what I'm going to encounter at the start of the game, depending on whether my opponent is several hundreds of points lower or higher than me, which potentially leads to needless blundering and most of the time simply influences my gameplay, on a subconcious level.
It would make the game more interesting too (think of the nice surprise of casually beating someone way stronger than you without even realizing it!)
Well, I get the same problem too.
But what you will never learn is to not get influenced by your opponent's rating.
And that is why I do not support this idea.

"Our" level? Nope, take a look again. And a number doesn't really scare me, it just... uhm, intimidates me a bit! Like a laser dot dancing over your forehead.

I refer to 'our level' as sub master.

Oh, I see.
Would be nice if a staff member could express his/her opinion over this idea, I mean at the end of the day, they make the decisions, right?
But other things are more important, sure.

I cant see why anyone would be opposed to this idea. if you don't like it, then don't use the option. Simple.

You're going to ask the directors in an OTB tourney to hide the ratings in the pairings list?

I do like the added part though.
As the title says, I'm suggesting to include the option of hiding your opponent's rating when playing him or her (afterwards it becomes visible again in the Recent Games chart).

EDIT: missed some words there...
