Holland isnt a country

Today I noticed that although I set my country at the Netherlands and it's accurately called the Netherlands in online chess and this forum that somehow it's called Holland in live chess.

Holland isn't a country. Although the name Holland is often used for the Netherlands, it's not correct (google it, look in a dictionary). Holland is only two out of the twelve provinces of the Netherlands. I'm not living in Holland and would like it that my country is accurately called the Netherlands in live chess. Besides it's just weird to call a country by two of its provinces ;).

ps. Soccer/football is the only exception, but this is a chess site isn't it ;).

You actually tell foreigners that you are 'from the Netherlands'? I think quite a majority of the Dutchies say they're 'from Holland'. At least I do :p

You are right, officially it's called the Netherlands. But I don't think anybody will ever think that you actually live in either of the two provinces when it says Holland next to your name. Unless you somehow feel offended, I see no point in whining about it. After all, you always have the flag ;)

yh but everyone calls netherlands by holland. iam from DR, here netherlands translate Reino de los Paises Bajos. it´s too long isnt it? so we just call it Holanda:)

This has been discussed before:

But I guess it has never been completely resolved.  Jonager, you mentioned the Low Countries, but wouldn't this also include Belgium and Luxembourg?

No, I don't think it does. 'Nederland' actually means 'low land' (neder is an old Dutch word for low), and I know that the French also say 'les Pays-Bas' which means 'the low lands'.

nop, by reino de los paises bajos we mean the proper netherlands together with their  territories in the caribbean

My knowledge of history is obviously less than perfect, but was Flanders exclusively Belgium, or did that include some of what is now H ... OK, I won't say it ... the Netherlands?  I am aware of the tulips in 1634!

No government...that could be a positive.

I think you are in the minority for an American. I haven't met anyone who has any idea that Belgium has a sizable population of Dutch people. I probably wouldn't know myself, but I have some Dutch heritage.

I went to my great uncle's funeral a number of years ago. They are from a rural area, and my mother pointed out our relatives tombstones; Robison, Dauerer, Brus, Tu Doits, Du Bois. The dates went back as much as 150 years. My family working on their farms for a century and a half. Seeing the names on those stones was a solemn and moving experience, like street names leading to the Netherlands.

I tell foreigners that I'm from the Netherland yes. I don't feel like I'm from Holland. With Holland I think about the west of the Netherlands and the history of that part of the country, which is different then the other parts of the country.

Besides it's just inconsistent to call it the netherlands everywhere at the site besides live chess.

The Netherlands is a great place too.  Could it be similar to Americans saying we are from America as opposed to saying the United States? I know South Americans Mexicans etc  gripe about the use of the term American being used for citizens of the United States because they claim that all western hemisphere people are American as part of the Americas.  perhaps instead of saying "I am from Holland" you could say "I am Dutch." on this site maybe you can ask the administrator to create a flag and identity for Dutch people in live chess.  That way those that would like to be from Holland could be from Holland and others could be Dutch people.

No it isn't. An equivalent would be to refer to the Unit States as the whole with for example New York, and writing New York next to your flag even if you are from an entirely different state.

Dutch people is the name for the people from the Netherlands. The country would still be the Netherlands. Holland also does not have a flag as it's not a country. We could off course make a flag for every province and then continue to make a flag for every city of this world, but that would be insane...

Since we're on the subject, I would like Minnesota to have it's own flag instead of the American flag, we'd really rather be a province of Canada anyway.  Thank you in advance.

Good point.  although I like New York it would difficult for me to accept being called a New Yorker Smile

No holland means woodland. It comes from holtland and holt is an old dutch word for hout which means wood.

@lo2 Could you please post your pointless post in some other topic...
