Improve your etic

I see the complaint about the software was inconsistent.

I'm not sure to get the point of the discussion about your expulsion:

- while chatting into an international site, you use an innocent finnish word, wich happens to be one of the most famous offensive english words: you get warned about stop using offensive language for the first time.

- you don't get it and repeat the same word; you get another warning.

- you repeat the same word for the third time; you get kicked off.

What were you exactly thinking?

I think if 2 Finnish people talk, they should use this word s* without any limits. Probably it should be a simple comparison in code.

@theliten probably you are using gmail and their google's spy software detected you using word s* and this is why you get this adverts.

Ziryab

Unsurprisingly, the censor bots lack difficulty with bovine excrement.

Wow, I had no idea of these two words. Interesting.

When I was a graduate teaching assistant I had to grade papers that a professor assigned in which students were required to adopt an emic perspective concerning a culture that was alien to them. We spent a lot of time trying to teach frosh to comprehend these two terms.

When you use a real word that is the wrong word you risk inviting those who understand what you didn't know that you said. Your whole discussion marks you as an outsider, and some of us get that from the thread's title.

[Okey... Maybe only Brits are insiders? So let´s say I should have spelled the title Etiquette. What does it matter? Can they speak 3 languages somehwat fluently? Most likely they can´t. In Finland we use one word where you english speakers use three or four.]

Actually I got no warning at all that week. I got two warnings before and that was because of bad english. Damn, it would be easier to not speak at all!

Your facility with languages is impressive, but not impressive enough to avoid the confusion created here.

In this context, insiders are those who understand online play. Your initial post suggests the contrary, despite your experience. Maybe it is a language difficulty, though. If the discussion were in Finnish, I would certainly be far further outside ('though I beat Finnish players frequently in online play).

I´m getting ADs here from Southern New Hampshire University, I was speaking about that specific university with another person, but it was not by email, it was messaging in another chess site.

theliten

They are coming to get us. I mean our money.

This is highly disturbing :(

Is Google coworking with NSA to spy all the people?!

Ziryab

Google knows everything.

Just to let you know that I haven´t visited that university website in years. It looks like the messaging was enough.

Ziryab

Meme and emic share a root. Both terms were coined by linguists who were thinking of phonemes as metaphors.

Very likely. And for once, I'm not trying to be funny.

I'm currently seeing that ad. Nice pic.

Btw, I didn't know that "slut" is censored. I mean, there are so many words that are considered by most people to be on the same level of offensiveness as "slut." It's not like swear words, where there are only a few of them in the English language.

I tried playing it once. It's basically just a typical fantasy RPG - no hot girls.
