You will have to play on "live chess".
If you move over to the tab that says "Home" on the right hand side, hover over it and you should get more options.
CLICK 'live chess'.
Then CLICK 'play live chess'
This will take your through to the portal where you can play 1000's of people from around the globe including friends. But they have to be online at the same time as you and follow the same instructions.
To play a 'friend', you need to go over to the 'Freinds Tab' located under the graph seek (the huge graph with green dots), click on that. This will list all of your friends who are online on live chess, all you have to do now is;
RIGHT CLICK ON YOUR FRIENDS NAME
then CLICK CHALLENGE TO A GAME
It will then present you with what time controls you'd like to play and if you want a rated or unrated game.
