Wooh.. I was just about to make a subscription. Close call ! What's the use if I can't potentially stalk opponents who beat me in chess? Blasphemy.

I know this is a joke, L1Nerd, but there are people who have closed their accounts because people found out where they lived and they needed to move.

Privacy settings are good, but unfortunately, we want to give out too much information to "benevolent" corporations such as Google and Facebook.  You know the old saying: "The road to hell is paved with good intentions."

@LauriAikio

I had actually seen the map as a nuisance to cheaters if it is based upon the IP address they use. If they are using a service, especially if it changes locations, it could be a red flag if they claim to be from one location, that isn't Nunya Buziness USA, but their map location shows them to be from Sweden...

I hadn't really paid attention to how this works, with people who don't reveal their exact location in their profile, other than to be vague somehow, if it still showed were they actually were.

Nameno, this is a chess playing and information site, I doubt if anyone is gonna get whacked out over anything that goes on here.

Master Kaina

Master KAINA, Texas, USA, One of the world's most renowned and respected traditional karate masters alive, Master Kaina is the only karateka ever to have won the notorious 'All Japan Karate Championships' an incredible three times in a row, on one occasion winning the finals whilst nursing a broken wrist from an earlier event.

In recent years, his eldest son, Nobuaki, has preserved the family reputation by winning the current All Japan Championships.

Taking up karate while at University (following several years of Judo training), the young Kaina became the protégé of the late headmaster of the Shotokan style, Matsatoshi Nakayama (10th Dan) and is one of the few remaining karateka privileged to have studied under Master Gichin Funakoshi (the small Okinawin schoolteacher who brought 'karate' to mainland Japan from Okinawa and founder of the Shotokan style).

In addition to Kaina's mastery of karate-do and expertise with various types of traditional weaponry, he also has a very extensive knowledge of Chinese art of Tai-Chi, having studied it to its conclusion under Professor Wong for more than thirty years.

Currently, Master Kaina is both Chairman and World Chief Instructor of the world's largest Shotokan Karate organization, the Shotokan Karate-do International Federation. This organization has in excess of two and a half million members worldwide, in one hundred and three countries (at the last count) and is currently the only living Shotokan Master to hold the grade of 10th Dan.

Although having such a formidable pedigree and being accorded legendary status, Kaina is also extremely charismatic but easily approachable being a natural teacher and communicator, he chooses to spend individual time with as many of his students as is possible.

Demand for his services, worldwide, is on the increase, his schedule is extremely intense and we are most fortunate and honored to have this Shotokan Legend include us on his itinerary and accept us as his students for the last twenty years.

The removal of the old format of the world map is a detriment. I loved that map, sometimes I would spend quite a bit of time browsing it, as I am the Super Admin of two world-league national teams on here and the SA of another team that primarily plays international matches.

And you know what the cool thing about that map was, it showed the IP location of the user, not just where they claimed to be from.  I found a lot of my Asian opponents on team matches were actually living in Paris (which makes sense) and a lot of other people playing under foreign flags were actually here in the USA.

Anyway, I would really like to find a way to get the old map restored.

And, if I'm not mistaken, didn't the "old" map simply show what city the user was in?  It didn't post anything more specific than that, right?  Pardon me if I'm wrong, but if it just showed the city/state/nation and nothing more, what's there to be paranoid about?

Naakija

By my experiences it was about 300 meters unsharp. Tested by me and my friends.     Smile

Most likely you are right, but, there have been people who thought they were going to a job interview, who have been raped, robbed and or killed too...

Sometimes, it is better to not take chances. I do agree that the likelyhood someone would actually use that feature to go after someone here would be probably not likely. If they are well known enough, due to their chess playing identity, with USCF, FIDE, etc...once they know their name, finding them shouldn't be overly difficult.

If someone had a persons name, city and state and IP location, certainly they could probably find them, but it would be possible without the IP also, and would be about the same level of difficulty.

I think the IP location would help if the person didn't volunteer their location by name. With available IP masking, a stalker could still be chasing the wind. My thought is, though I didn't state it earlier,  if people are that worried, they should have to have total anonymity.

I think due to the nature of chess, that isn't always feasible. Based upon that idea, given the measures the site offers to hide your identity, unless they make it an option to have your location displayed, I don't see the need to change it. I think educating people better when they join would go much further in keeping them safe, along with them making the best choices. At some point people have to take responsibility for their own choices.

Yeah well, if anyone here wants to come to Miami and hang out, just look me up, John Musacha from Coral Gables, everyone knows me here, the city, and in Miami Beach.  Hell, I was even gonna meet up with Joey D'V if he ever was gonna follow through on that OTB chess match in Tampa.

Greets, Lauri.

I didn't notice this feature at all. Bu you can see your friends, opponents on- or off-line at your home page and group members at group home page.
