THis is totally rediculous and should be reversed immediately. I f a player cannot keep their time committment, they lose. Period. Just like in real life.
To let them go automatically on vacation means there is no time limit... so what credibility does this site or the time limit have? Anyone can committ to a tourney or match time and you just automatically give them vacation of they are close to expiring ??? You must be joking.... no intelligent person can do such a stupid "auto-policy" like this.
This is unfair to the good people who play and keep their time commitment and the opponents who are waiting days and weeks.
I have one match where the opponent was 1 hour from defaulting and your idiotic auto vacation kicked in, when he should have rightfully lost. Instead all is delayed. What is the use of any time controls then with such a stupid policy?????????????????????????????????????
Simply a very imbecilic new policy that needs to be abolished immediately for the time controls to have any relevancy !

You just answered a 2010 thread. This "imbecilic" policy is far from new. And going nuts about it won't change anythning..
I was about to reply and explain the "new" rule, but the words used by you made me think that I will just waste my time ...
"Sometimes, life demands that you put your favorite things on hold for a while.. Chess.com understands this, and gives all members the ability to pause their Online Chess games using an allotment of Vacation time." - staff

there is nothing to explain. Its pure stupidity. Why have a time rule if auto vacation can kick in.
If you don't like vacation, or the possibility of vacation, you alway have the option to only play in tournaments that don't allow it. Problem solved.
And one of the benefits of being a premium member, is the auto-vacation. It's a nice perk and has saved me a couple of times ... such as when a tornado ripped through town and I was without internet or power for a few days. Or when we had the blizzard last February and were without power then for a week or so.
so the rule has no logic or sportsmanship behind it. Just an angle?
This further shows how stupid it is. Maybe you should eliminate time controls all together? I have many opponents who start losing and go on vacation. I doubt they all had storms rip thru.
I suggest two adjustments to "vacation" rules:
1. subsequent vacation CAN NOT be taken earlier then 24 hours after previous ended
2. after "vacationer" came back - waiting time should be reset to amount he/she had when vacation started

On point 2, with the exception of someone that comes off of vacation before the first 24 hours have elapsed, the time left to move is exactly the same as when you went on vacation.
<< Below is the summary of the new rules:
-------
When turning on vacation time, Or auto timeout protection is activated, all vacation times will be a MINIMUM of 1 day.
This means if you are only on vacation for 5 minutes, 24 hours will be removed from your saved vacation time.
If you are on vacation for 23 hours, it is 24 hours.
But if you are on vacation for 25 hours, then it is 25 hours on your time used.
The 'One Day' minimum only affects the first 24 hours you're on vacation
This is to prevent "vacation" time being used to just manage an over-loaded games list. - but removal of 24 hours from vacation time, in turn adds 24 hours onto the game clock, hence the time difference. One day is still lost from vacation time though. >>
Well, I must admit I don't like this new rule at all. One of the reasons I became a premium member was to escape of the time management in order not to lose on-time. This new rule seems to call back the time management in order not to lose vacation days for nothing. It's definitely a step back IMO.
Shouldn't this kind of rules be published and announced publicly ?
What's your oppinion, readers, on this fact ?
