good idea, but i guess the answer will be "don't play if you might be needed". I believe this will get very mis-used like you said though

I wanted to suggest that chess.com introduce a pause button in live games. Sometimes, especially in blitz games, one has to attend to something urgently and will have to abandon the game. To prevent others from misusing this option, it could be restricted, say 1 pause per live game, and maybe it could be agreed by the other player. Obviously, the board will have to be clear to prevent both players from using this as a chance to calculate variations. The pause option could also be timed.
