Well, I've met almost no cheater in ICC over more than 10 years Smile (maybe more, I don't remember exactly when I started playing there), while I had a whole bunch of opponents banned on chess.com (at least 30? 40? 50?) in a couple of years time, maybe more, I don't know exactly, and I met a couple others.

Way too much to my taste.

Perhaps you are looking for a better class of people, not just people who don't cheat.

People whom you can trust, who are friendly on the forums. Where you can post any question you want and people will respond politely, instead of attacking you.

People who will out of nowhere buy you a gift, remember your birthday, and your family, and people who are real, good and trustworthy, not possible psychopaths with multiple accounts, or with hitler avatars. Real, normal, good, honest, mature, friendly adults.

Where the block function is useless, and you don't need to disable chat.

Where you can say things and and not be ripped apart savagely. Where you don't have to constantly keep you guard up, and can just enjoy each others company.

Is this what you mean, mon frere?

VLaurenT

I'd buy mature.

Well, if I take the example of ICC, the live section works pretty well with no more than a couple thousands members. I'm pretty sure chess.com has more premium members than ICC, so I would expect a premium-only chess.com website to work correctly on its own.

I try out ICC. My astonishment is I get "thanks for playing" win or lose. We don't chat, we just play.

bean_Fischer

They refrain themselves quite well. When they lose, they know they play someone better and need to improve. When they win, their ratings increase.

Here I sometimes get "cheaters", etc. Not to mention many "unsprtmanship for rematch" threads.

I think players should get over them. Just play and have fun.

AlCzervik

I've gone to forum topics, read the posts, and been unable to provide answers to members questions because the thread is in the premium member forum. Those that post queries in the pm topic are eliminating many members that can steer them in the right direction. A separate site only exacerbates that problem.

Wolfbird

Snobbery anyone?

DesertNomad1948

I know for a fact that there are 469 cheaters on this site and 608 honest players and 47 I'm not sure of. Just look at my win/lost ratio.

I so hope you are being sarcastic... Kind of hard to tell online...

The amount of Cheaters here are higher than ICC, I do have to say that. However, what is the problem playing against them? You lose, big deal. The ratings on here are just suggested ratings, they have no effect on you in real life. As for those who choose to cheat, congratulations! You have gained no knowledge nor gratitude. As for you who play honestly, you learn more and you will be better off in the long run.

Oh, 2100, no biggie. I bet you EVERY single member on this site can beat your live rating :)

TheBigDecline

That would be the site's mascot:

Great idea, I would even pay MORE THAN THE CURRENT PRICES for a premium membership if there were little-to-no cheats. This includes titled cheaters as well.

Perhaps the problem is not so much with cheaters, as with your own attitude towards the game.. When did it become more important for you to win your games than to become a better, stronger, more potent player?

No, the problem is with cheaters. Because for one thing, if you keep playing cheaters that use engines your rating will be much lower, and then its harder to get games against players of your real level. I guess this is harder for those lower rated to understand. I'll give you an example.

Say your normal rating is 2000 and you want to practice your chess openings against players around that level. You challenge people and if you keep getting engines, your rating will go down say to 1800. Then you challenge people at 1800 level and beat them like they are butter. You never get to play against the right opposition.

Plus if i want to play an engine, I can do it at home. I don't pay to play an engine thanks. It's impossible to gauge how well you are improving/progressing against human opposition if you are just facing engines.

It's very common in live chess. In fact I would say that most players over 2200 in blitz are cheats, even some titled players. Some titled players are cheating because they are pissed off with cheaters taking their rating points. People at my chess club report cheats on this site, but hardly anything is done, unless its blatantly obvious to 1300 level staff members. For example there is one guy on here who takes the piss by challenging titled or high rated players, and after he loses, he re-challenges for the next game and uses an engine. That guy has been reported a few times, but the only thing staff did was get Danny Rensch to play him in a few games. Of course that guy was not a dumb ass and he didn't use the engines in those games, and lost them all.

It's seriously frustrating and the reason why I won't buy a membership at this site. It's not professional enough here. Would be very simple to copy ICC's policies like the OP mentions, but for some reason they don't do it. The fact that ICC is a pay site filters out the majority of cheats anyways. However it's also down to their good policies. Here cheaters can get away with murder.

mldavis617

That should bother you only if you play for ratings, which are meaningless here.  The membership gives you access to videos and other things that have nothing to do with playing for points.

Wolfbird

Why don't you players who want to be elitist, organize your own group of premium players. That way you can stay away from the great unwashed who don't pay. I don't know how that would keep cheaters out, but that's my suggestion.

netzach

Am for this idea.

Go post in the premium only forum (oh yeah no one posts there you will be all alone) and check the little box in live chess that says premium only and have a nice life.

hehe.

Don't mean separatist?

Would like the subscribed area of the site so that chess can be conducted seriously there.

Would still be active in the main site also.

Fact is something must be done as many people who pay for the site are becoming disillusioned with conduct of a few idiots. Smile

If we all stop paying because of them then the whole site may go defunct.

AlCzervik

Because he reads.
